GUWAHATI: At least 800 bighas of cultivable land have submerged in the Jiya Dhol river in the Dhemaji district of Assam in the past few years.
A large tract of land was submerged in the river at Khontopur, Lalukijan and Kesakothoni village under Jayrampur Panchayat.
Local people have been passing sleepless nights in fear of erosion as hundreds of houses, educational institutes are on the verge of being eroded.

“We are residing in this village since 1971. At that time the village was far from the river. It was filled with trees and forest. The land was also very fertile. All the land has submerged in the Jiya Dhol river,” said a local resident.
“Almost 40-50 meter land submerges in the river every day. We have taken a number of precautionary measures to stop the erosion but have failed. We request the Assam government to take steps and help us,” said another villager.
