Guwahati, Dec 31: Eminent dramatist, writer and poet Ratna Ojha passed away at his residence in Guwahati shortly after midnight today. He was 88.
Born in Barpeta on Dec 5, 1931, Ratna Ojha was hailed for introducing street plays so as to revive the Assamese theatre after the demise of his guru Natyasurya Phani Sarma.

His contribution to the revival of theatres in Assam will be hailed by centuries as he used the almost dying art form, shaped and moulded it and used it to highlight various issues afflicting the society of the time.
Besides being a highly-acclaimed playright, he also penned several books and poems.

Ojha was honoured with the prestigious Natyasurya Award in 2005 for his contributions in the field of theatre.

His death has been widely mourned with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other eminent personalities from the cultural world condoling his demise and terming his passing away as an irreparable loss for Assam.
