Herds of wild elephants continue to stray into villages across Assam following shrinking forest cover. While a rogue elephant, whom villagers have named ‘Laden’, trampled to death three persons at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district this week alone, a woman was killed by another pachyderm at Kathiatoli in Nagaon district today.
The woman, identified as Malati Nayak (45), had gone to take a bath in a nearby stream when she was trampled to death by the elephant. Villagers alleged that the giant beast has been straying into areas of human habitation and creating a reign of terror among villagers.

Angry villagers also resorted to a road block besides preventing police and forest officials from taking away the woman’s body.
“We have been complaining to forest officials about the elephant that has been creating terror in the area. But they did not heed to our prayers. Today the elephant has killed this woman,” an angry villager said.
