Raja Roy and Mridul Deka were killed on the spot after they were hit by a speeding dumper at Lalmati, Guwahati

GUWAHATI, April 10: The two persons killed by a speeding dumper on the national highway near the Games Village at Lalmati in Guwahati were neighbours and were returning home after collecting rice distributed under ration cards.

Eyewitnesses said both the deceased persons — Raja Roy and Mridul Deka — were returning in their individual two-wheelers after collecting their quota of rice distributed under the ration card scheme when they were knocked down by the speeding stone-laden dumper on Wednesday evening.

The speeding dumper crushed the duo killing them on the spot while hitting two other vehicles.

Eyewitnesses said the dumper had first hit another vehicle and then crashed into the two two-wheelers killing Raja Roy and Mridul Kalita on the spot.

Raja Roy was working as a driver and leaves behind his wife and two minor daughters.

Mridul Deka was an employee of a private press and lived with his family comprising his wife, a five-year-old daughter, his mother and two brothers.

Both were residents of Rukmininagar locality of Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the two families are in shock and grief after losing their kin in such a tragic accident.

“What will happen to us? How will my daughter-in-law take care of her minor daughter now that my son is no more. I appeal to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to provide us with some financial help and a job to my daughter-in-law,” Mridul Deka’s mother told News Live, while asking authorities to rein in speeding vehicles, especially dumpers, which are driven in breakneck speed by drivers with scant respect for traffic rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, angry residents of Lalmati and people living near the national highway also demanded of the authorities to take concrete steps to prevent accidents which, they alleged, keep on taking place along the national highway leading to the loss of lives of innocent people.
