Dr. S. R. Ranganathan Remembered : 9 Library organizations of Assam Virtually observe Librarian’s Day

GUWAHATI: Assam Library Association (ALA) along with Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) Zone V, Assam College Librarians Association (ACLA), Dept. of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University (DLIS, G.U.), Alumni Association of the DLIS, G.U., K.K. Handique Library, G.U., Central Library, Tezpur University, Women Librarians’ Association of Assam (WLAA), Society for Advancement of Librarianship (SAL) and LIS Links celebrated National Librarian’s Day commemorating 128th birth anniversary of Padmashree Dr. S. R. Ranganathan on Wednesday.

 It was a two-hour online programme where 164 participants across the country participated. The eminent speakers of the programme were Prof. Alaka Buragohain, former HoD, DLISc, GU and former President of ALA, Prof. N.N.Sharma, former HoD, DLISc, GU, Prof. R.K.Barman, former HoD, DLISc, GU, Prof  Narendra Lahkar, former HoD, DLISC, GU & former President of ALA and President, IASLIC, Sri Mahendra Nath Bora, former Librarian of Tezpur University, Mr. Wooma Shankar Dev Nath, former Librarian of Gauhati University, Mr. Bhupen Goswami, former Deputy Librarian, GU, Mr. Srimonta Madhab Bora, President ACLA, Dr (Mrs). Jyotika Devi, President, WLAA and Dr. Mukesh Saikia, Librarian, Tezpur university.

The speakers discussed the life and works of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, and changing roles of librarian and library in this pandemic situation. Prof. Lahkar mentioned the Assam Government’s latest decision of increasing honorarium of village librarians. In the concluding speech, Dr. Mukesh Saikia urged LIS professionals to use latest technologies in libraries. The programme was moderated by Prof. Sanjay Kr. Singh, HoD, Dept. of LIS, GU and Dr. Tilak Hazarika, DLISc, GU offered the vote of thanks. The whole program was also streamed live through LIS Link’s Facebook and YouTube page that gathered more than 500 audience.
