Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award: Himanta Biswa Sarma distributes 15,160 scooters to students

GUWAHATI: Assam Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award of Pragyan Bharati scheme of the state government distributed scooters to 15,160 meritorious girl students of the state in a program held at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Auditorium in Bhangagarh area of Guwahati.

A total of 15,160 meritorious girl students received scooters under the scheme where 5,028 students are from the 2018 batch and 10,132 students are from the 2019 batch. The students of the 2018 and 2019 batches were selected on a Merit basis.

Earlier, a total of 22,245 students got scooters in the first phase under Dr Banikanta Merit Award.

It is to be mentioned that the flagship scheme was launched on December 20 at a program at Amingaon in Kamrup district by Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Under the Pragyan Bharati scheme, a total of Rs. 144.30 crore will be spent to provide scooters to 22245 girl students to make their journey in the pursuit of knowledge smoother.

Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Tweeted, “GoA has launched the second phase of Dr Banikanta Merit Award today, Feb 17, with distribution of scooters to 15,160 bright girl students. 5,028 girl students have been selected on merit basis from HSE batch 2018 & 10,132 have been selected from that of 2019 batch.”
