Biswanath Police Tuesday arrested the main accused in the Diplunga lynching incident in which one person was killed while three others were seriously injured.
Police arrested Dinesh Patar, a resident of Diplunga tea estate lane 15 who is also the secretary of the local village defence party (VDP), for instigating the murderous mob into attacking the four persons after branding them cattle thieves.

Biswanath Police said Patar had led other residents of the tea garden to believe that the four persons were cattle thieves and later instigated the murderous assault on them. With Patar’s arrest, the total number of accused arrested in connection with the lynching incident has risen to 14.

The four persons were physically assaulted by a mob at Diplonga tea garden under Sootea police station in Biswanath district early Thursday (Aug 16) morning after they were branded cattle thieves. While one person named Deben Rajbongshi succumbed to his injuries, the other three — Phulchand Sahu, Bijay Nayak and Pujen Rajbongshi — were injured.
