Nearly a month after the savage lynching of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das at Panbari village under Dokmoka police station in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district amid ‘child lifter’ rumours, villagers of adjoining Dima Hasao district have done the exact opposite by handing over three sadhu babas to police after a section of people suspected them to be ‘child lifters’ and even pelted stones at the car they were travelling. Troopers of the Territorial Army based in Mahur also took the lead in preventing a Dokmoka-like incident and asking people not to harm the three sages who were on the way to Tripura to visit the Tripura Sundari temple.
Three sages wearing saffron robes and sporting beards were spotted by people at Mahur in the morning with a few agitated ones among the crowd reportedly pelting stones in their car that developed a technical snag.
The three sadhus came from Uttar Pradesh and had spent few days in Guwahati attending the Ambubachi Mela at the Kamakhya Temple.
The Territorial Army troopers and a section of people among the crowd informed police who later rescued the trio and took them to the police station.
Dima Hasao police, meanwhile, appealed to the people not to heed to ‘child lifter’ rumours and also not take law into their hands.
