GUWAHATI, March 24: Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Dr Numal Momin was reportedly manhandled by Congress MLA Nurul Huda inside the Assam Legislative Assembly premises, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged on Monday.

The incident took place while Congress MLAs were protesting BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi’s behaviour inside the assembly when he, in a fit of rage while being provoked by Opposition MLAs, reportedly lunged at them on Friday.

Kurmi had later apologised for the incident.

Opposition MLAs, however, demanded of the Speaker to initiate a breach of privilege against the BJP MLA from Mariani.

It was during the start of the proceedings of the house today that Nurul Huda, Congress MLA from Rupohi, reportedly dashed towards Deputy Speaker Dr Numol Momin and physically manhandled him.

A photograph of the alleged incident also went viral on social media with Chief Minister Dr Sarma condemning the incident in the assembly besides saying that a police case will be registered against the Congress MLA for manhandling the Deputy Speaker.

“A police case will be registered against Congress MLA Nurul Huda for manhandling Deputy Speaker Dr Numol Momin inside the assembly premises. We will investigate the matter. It is very shocking that a tribal leader is attacked inside the assembly premises. It’s a very sensitive matter. The Opposition had raised a big hue and cry when Rupjyoti Kurmi had just stepped towards an Opposition MLA. But today Deputy Speaker Dr Momin was physically attacked. I want to ask those who had criticised Rupjyoti Kurmi the other day whether they will condemn today’s attack on Dr Numal Momin? Today’s incident will send a very bad message,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma said in the assembly after the incident.

Dr Momin was later seen entering the assembly with a bandaged left hand.

The incident is likely to snowball into a more bigger issue with both the ruling party and the Opposition trading allegations and counter-allegations against each other.
