Sitting Tezpur Lok Sabha MP RP Sarmah today (March 16) resigned from the primary membership of the BJP after his name did not figure in the list of probable candidates seeking tickets for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Incidentally, Sarmah was ignored by the State BJP and his name couldn’t even make it to the candidates’ panel for Tezpur from where he was elected to Lok Sabha five years ago.
Sarmah said he was hurt after the BJP did not even name him in the panel for Tezpur although he is the sitting MP from the constituency.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, it may be mentioned, will get the party ticket to contest from Tezpur and his name was also sent to the central party leadership for approval. Tezpur, it may be added, is the only constituency where the BJP has a single ticket hopeful in the panel of candidates sent to the central leadership.
RP Sarmah, meanwhile, told News Live in New Delhi that he is keeping al options open and will in all likelihood join a national political party. There are reports that the Congress may field him from Tezpur.
