Delhi-NCR Storm: A sudden and powerful storm hit Delhi and NCR on Wednesday night, killing six people and leaving many others injured. The storm brought strong winds, heavy rain, and flying debris that caused huge damage to homes, vehicles, and public infrastructure. Trees and electric poles fell all over the city, leading to power cuts in many areas. The people of Delhi were left shaken by the sudden fury of nature.
One of the scariest moments of the night was in the skies, when an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Srinagar with over 220 passengers ran into a hailstorm mid-air. Among the passengers were five Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose. After landing safely, she described it as a “near-death experience.” She said, “People were screaming, praying and panicking. I thought my life was over.” The nose of the aircraft was badly damaged, but the pilot’s quick thinking helped everyone reach safely. The flight landed at 6:30 pm, and videos of the panic inside the flight have gone viral on social media.
Back on the ground, the storm caused many tragedies. A man with disabilities died near Lodhi Road when a pole fell on him. In Gokulpuri, 22-year-old Azhar lost his life after a tree fell on him. In Greater Noida, a woman died when a grill fell on her, while her grandson was injured. Another man, Ramkrishna, a teacher, died during his evening walk when a tree collapsed on him. Incidents of falling balconies and poles injured many across different parts of Delhi like Kashmiri Gate, Mangolpuri, and Mukherjee Nagar.
The power company, BSES, had to shut down electricity in many places to avoid electrocution. They said, “The safety and well-being of citizens remains the highest priority.” Many families are still dealing with the damage to their homes and vehicles. The storm didn’t just take lives, it also left behind fear and destruction.
The TMC leaders, including Derek O’Brien, Nadimul Haque, Manas Bhunia, and Mamata Thakur, will be in Jammu and Kashmir till 23 May. They had gone to express support for victims of cross-border violence. But what was supposed to be a mission of solidarity became a terrifying journey in the sky.
The night reminded everyone of how unpredictable nature can be. While many lost their lives or homes, others narrowly escaped with their lives. Delhi is now slowly getting back to normal, but the storm has left behind painful memories and a strong reminder of life’s uncertainty.
