Delhi-Mumbai trains to continue for now amid spike in Covid cases

Guwahati:  Trains between Delhi and Mumbai will continue as usual for now amid a surge in Covid-19 cases. The development comes after it was reported that the Maharashtra government discussed a proposal to stop flights and trains from the national capital.

The Ministry of Railways late Friday clarified that no such decision was taken after there was speculation about the move in some media reports.

“There have been reports in section of media today about cancellation of certain trains on Delhi Mumbai sector. It may be clarified that  Railways has NOT taken any decision regarding cancellation of  trains on Mumbai Delhi sector,” the Rail Ministry tweeted.

A spike in Covid-19 cases across many cities including the national capital leading to prompting state governments to bring back restrictions such as night curfews and Section 144.

 

Delhi witnessed 6,608 fresh coronavirus cases taking the overall infection tally to 5.17 lakh and death toll to 8,159 with 118 more fatalities on Friday, according to a PTI report. 

The new Covid cases were detected from 62,425 tests conducted on Thursday, including 23,507 RT-PCR tests, the highest till date. According to the Delhi health department, the positivity rate was 10.59 per cent.

The national capital had reported 7,456 Covid-19 cases on Thursday and the positivity rate was 12.09 per cent. The highest single-day spike in cases till date in Delhi was 8,593 which was recorded on November 11. 

A spurt in cases was witnessed in Delhi amid the festive season and rising pollution levels. Durga Puja celebrations ended on October 25, Diwali was on Saturday and Chhath on November 20-21.
