GUWAHATI, Jan 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his “deepest condolences to devotees who lost loved ones” in the stampede at Prayagraj early Wednesday morning, confirming that innocent lives have been lost in the tragedy that unfolded after a sea of people thronged for the ‘Amrit Snan’ at Tribeni Sangam on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

“The tragic incident that took place in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely distressing. My deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. The local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way. I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi ji and I am constantly in touch with the state government,” Prime Minister Modi stated.

The exact death toll could not be known as the government is yet to confirm the exact number of people who have lost their lives in the tragedy but reports say that at least 12 people could have died in the tragedy.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier appealed devotees to not pay attention to any kind of rumour while asking them to follow guidelines and cooperate with authorities.

“Take bath at the ghat of Mother Ganga near which you are, do not try to go towards Sangam Nose. All of you should follow the instructions of the administration and cooperate in making arrangements. People are bathing peacefully at all the ghats of Sangam. Do not pay any attention to any rumours,” he wrote on ‘X’.
