Deaths of young COVID-19 patients raise concern in Assam

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: The number of fatalities among the young COVID-19 patients has emerged as a matter of grave concern for the Assam health department.

Earlier, the fatalities were limited to the elderly people with comorbidities only. But in last few days, several young patients have succumbed to the infection at different hospitals of the state.

On September 3, Jugal Kishore Das, a 33-year old man from Sonapur in Kamrup (Metro) district lost his life to COVID-19 at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

On the other hand, a 34-year-old woman from Sivasagar succumbed to the infection at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. The woman identified as Sabina Yasmin was having breathing complications.

“She had only cough and breathing issues,” said Sabina’s mother.

Similarly, 45-year-old Jhantu Deb died due to COVID-19 at Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital at Golaghat.

The rising number of deaths among the young patients has posed serious challenges to the Assam health department.

Earlier on Friday, health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grave concern over the mounting number of post-COVID-19 deaths in the state.

“This is a major concern. The post-COVID-19 complications are rising. Most patients are managing well in isolation in the first 10 days, but many are also developing breathing issues after turning COVID-19 negative,” Sarma said.

“Yesterday, I was handling a similar case from my constituency. The patient has turned serious after recovering from COVID-19. In case of patients like this, the data cannot be included in COVID deaths since they are negative. I am told that hospitals have more people with post-COVID-19 issues and many are dying as well,” the health minister said on Friday.
