GUWAHATI, Oct 22: Cyclone Dana, moving towards the Eastern coast of the country, is likely to make landfall on Thursday (Oct 24) after strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm, the Indian Meteorological Department warned.
Cyclone Dana will be the second cyclonic storm to strike the Indian coast and, as a precautionary measure, the IMD has already issued alerts to West Bengal and Odisha warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
A low-pressure area has been created in the east-central Bay of Bengal which will eventually move northwestward and is expected to highly intensify into a possibly severe cyclone storm by October 23, 2024, and make landfall along the Odisha-West Bengal coast between Puri and Sagar Island on the night of October 24 and early morning of October 25.
The severe cyclonic storm, the IMD further warned, could have a wind speed of 100-110 kmph.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea during this period.
