GUWAHATI, Aug 2: Assam lawn bowl player Nayanmoni Saikia etched her name in history books after becoming the first player from the State to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Nayanmoni, who hails from Sarupathar in Golaghat district, won the gold in the Women’s Four event with the four-member Indian team defeating South Africa in the final.
Nayanmoni along with Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey scripted history winning the first ever gold medal in Lawn bowls in Commonwealth Games history.
“Historic win in Birmingham! India is proud of Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey for bringing home the prestigious Gold in Lawn Bowls. The team has demonstrated great dexterity and their success will motivate many Indians towards Lawn Bowls,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Indian team won the historic gold at Birmingham.
