COVID-19: Tripura imposes weekend curfew

GUWAHATI: With the COVID-19 scenario taking a serious turn, the Tripura government on Saturday imposed a total weekend curfew in the state with various restrictions. The new Covid restrictions will come into effect from 12 pm on Saturday and will remain till 6 am on Monday.

As the state’s Covid tally continues to rise, at least 138 of the 151 COVID-19 samples sent for genome sequencing have tested positive for the Delta Plus variant, 10 others tested positive for the Delta variant while 3 cases of the Alpha variant were found.

Tripura is the first state in the northeast region to have recorded a case of the Delta Plus variant with a significant rise in the highly transmissible and infectious variant.

On July 2, the Central government rushed a multi-disciplinary team to Tripura for COVID-19 control and containment measures. Expert teams were also sent to Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Manipur.

The Centre had rushed to aid the states as they have been reporting a high number of Coronavirus cases.

With an overall positivity rate of 5.15 per cent, Tripura so far has recorded 69,550 COVID-19 cases.
