Covid-19: Assam lockdown begins

Guwahati: Streets of Guwahati were seen deserted with closed shops and empty streets just after the clock hit 06:00 PM. Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced lockdown in Assam to curb the spread of Coronavirus disease.

“Violations of lockdown may lead to up to 2 years of imprisonment,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Essential services such as pharmacies, groceries, banks and petrol pumps will remain open during the lockdown period.

The lockdown started at 06:00 PM, Tuesday and will continue till 31st March.

Inter-state transport will remain suspended during the lockdown period. Meanwhile, trains and flights have also been cancelled by the authorities to stop the spread of the Coronavirus disease.

“This is a very important step taken by the Government.This lockdown will surely prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease. We have closed our shops and will keep it entirely shut till further notice,” said a shopkeeper in Guwahati.

“I urge everyone to stay at home. This lockdown is an important step taken by Assam government. All other states of India should also follow the measures and try to stay inside home,” said a woman who came to buy groceries.
