Guwahati:  The Assam Government will announce a new SOP tomorrow, Friday (January 7) with COVID-19 cases showing an uptick in Assam. This was stated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will be chairing a high-level meeting with senior health and disaster management officials in Guwahati tonight (January 6).

Speaking to the media Chief Minister Saram said, ” We will hold a high level meeting with senior health and disaster management officials tonight and it will not be less than 2 hours. So whatever happens the people of the state will get to know tomorrow. It won’t be a huge set of guidelines in the upcoming SOP because we will not move forward for a lockdown.”

” The SOP may include wearing of mask in public places and there can be restriction on mass gatherings in the market. So these are a few things we can implement in the SOP keeping in mind about life and livelihood of the people in the state. We don’t want people to suffer economically,” added Chief Misnter Sarma.

Earlier in the day, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that the government may have to forward the night curfew timings, look into the primary level schools, and enforce using of masks to deal with the situation.

The health minister on Thursday reviewed the healthcare facilities at the COVID care centre in Sarusajai Stadium which has been reopened following the surge in positive cases.

On Wednesday, Assam saw a steep rise in Covid cases with 591 people tested positive of which two have been confirmed with the Omicron variant. The positivity rate was pegged at 1.72 percent.
