GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has been targeting 3,000 beds in Guwahati to deal with increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati on Wednesday, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Sarma said, “As of now we have 1538 bed capacities in Guwahati including the Khanapara Hospital. Out of them almost 1,000 beds have been occupied. We estimate that we need around 3,000 hospital beds.”

Dr. Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated a 900-bedded COVID-19 care hospital at Khanapara playground in Guwahati. Another 450-bedded COVID-19 hospital is also coming up at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre. Sarma along with his deputy Pijsuh Hazarika inspected the site at the trade centre on Wednesday.

“We have few more backup plans. Later we may convert Sarusajai Stadium into a hospital if it is needed. Then we have to shift  the screening centre from there,” Sarma added.
