A woman income tax official was on Wednesday arrested after she was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000. Janmoni Bhuyan Sharma alias Rupali Das, an employee of Lakhimpur income tax office, was arrested by a joint team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption directorate and Lakhimpur Police when she was caught red-handed accepting Rs 5,000 as bribe from a complainant named Tonmoy Dutta.
The arrested official had allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 from the complainant to issue a tax clearance certificate who then approached Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths. Based on the complaint, cops laid a trap and arrested her while she was accepting the first instalment of Rs 5,000.
The arrested woman employee is being brought to Guwahati where she will be further questioned. Anti-corruption sleuths and police are also looking at the possible involvement of other officials in corrupt practices.
