Guwahati: The outbreak of Coronavirus in India has forced people in the country to stay inside their homes to limit the spread of the deadly virus.
And with the recent lockdown in Assam, all the people have resorted to working from home and with even more kids out of school, there has been an increased dependency on the internet.
With the increased traffic and unprecedented internet usage people in Assam are experiencing a significant drop in their internet speed considering stress on their PCs, tabs and mobile phones.
People are not able to watch their favorite web series in high definition or not able to download anything. People in the state are finding it hard to even browse Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
“I work for an IT company and have been working from my house for the last 2 days as the Coronavirus is spreading like a wild fire. It has become a nightmare for me while having video conferencing calls with client abroad. It is taking a toll on my work life. The internet speed is gradually droping day by day. I just hope the internet speed gets better in the coming days,” said an employee working for an IT solution company.
Another college student stated that, ” Due to quarantine everyone is under lockdown situation and to keep ourselves occupied we just have an internet to entertain ourselves. But from last few days I am not able to browse anything neither able to watch anything online. Downloading something seems a distant dream now with the current internet speed. I am not even able to play any kind of online games”.
Why it is happening?
Almost everyone in a household has a device to browse the internet but also used to be the case before.
Even though the number of devices is the same, the number of devices using the internet at the same time has risen.
Earlier, the case was different, some users of the household would go to offices or colleges and shift from Wi-fi to phone data, but now all of them are indoors and most of them are relying on Wi-fi or mobile data using hotspot, all together.
And this is happening all over the state. And on top of that, all data is being used either to download stuff from the internet , stream movies, web series, work from home that may include video conference, too.
All these amount to heavy data consumption, slowing down the internet for everyone.
