Coronavirus scare: Kaziranga Utsav postponed

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHATI: As Coronavirus alert has been sounded in Assam, organisers have postponed first-ever Kaziranga Utsav which was slated to take place from March 12 to15.

There is a semblance of panic among the local people as a tourist from the United States, who visited Kaziranga National Park on February 28, tested positive for Covid-19 in Bhutan.

Bokakhat sub-divisional administration has postponed the festival to prevent mass gatherings amidst the Coronavirus scare.

The sub-divisional officer (Civil) of Bokakhat Vivek Shyam said that though 80 per cent preparation of the Kaziranga Utsav has been completed, the organizing committee has decided to postpone the event considering the threat to health of people in view of the outbreak of the virus. He also said that the administration is maintaining strict vigil with two groups of doctors as per the order and guidelines of the health department.

This is for the second time that the festival has been postponed. Earlier it was scheduled to be held from January 5 to 7, but postponed following violent protests over the anti-CAA protests.
