GUWAHATI, Dec 18: A Congress activist named Mridul Islam who died after the party’s ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ protest march in Guwahati today had not suffered from any injury nor was any force such a lathi charge used on protesters by police, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said.
A protest march from Uzan Bazaar to the Governor’s residence Raj Bhavan was carried out by the Congress party although no permission was taken from Police or from other agencies concerned, the Police Commissioner said, adding that police had set up barricades to stop the protesters but didn’t use any force on Congress protesters.
Tear gas shells were only rolled out on the street but were not fired at the protesters, he said, adding that protesters threw them at policemen.
“The Congress activist named Mridul Islam (45) told fellow protesters after the march had ended that he was feeling unwell. He was then taken to the nearby Wintrobe Hospital where doctors advised that he be taken to the GMCH for better treatment,” Barah said, adding that doctors at GMCH declared him brought dead.
“A magisterial inquest was conducted and no external injury was found on the deceased. The post-mortem will reveal as to why the deceased died,” the Guwahati Police Commissioner added.
