Hours after the Assam Government published the final NRC draft including the names of over 2.89 crore people out of the total 3.29-plus applicants, the Central Government has directed the government of Assam to complete the update process by Dec 31 this year.
The office of the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a gazette notification, has set Dec 31 this year as the deadline for updating and publishing the final citizens’ register.

“… the Registrar General of Citizen Registration, hereby, notifies that the enumeration in connection with the updation of the National Register of Citizens, 1951, in respect of the State of Assam shall be completed within the period ending on the 31st day of December, 2018,” a gazette notification issued by the office of the Registrar General, India, stated.
Incidentally, the Assam Government had published the final NRC draft yesterday (July 30) wherein the names of nearly 41 lakh were excluded. Authorities, however, stated that genuine Indian citizens whose names have not been included in the final draft can re-apply through claims and objections.
