Class 9 student takes extreme step in Assam’s Lakhimpur; family alleges school’s headmaster rebuked, subjected her to corporal punishment

GUWAHATI, Feb 8: A Class 9 student of a residential boarding school at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district of Assam took the extreme step at her home in Lakhimpur after allegedly being subjected to corporal punishment and also rebuked publicly by the headmaster of the school, her family members alleged on Saturday.

The student, identified as Horimoni Bhuyan, ended her life on Thursday, with her family members alleging that she went into depression after being allegedly subjected to corporal punishment and also rebuked in front of other students by headmaster of Little Star School, Gogamukh, where she was studying.

Family members of the deceased student alleged that Horimoni had to be administered medical treatment after she went through the ordeal at the hands of Palash Koch, the boarding school’s headmaster.

She came home after the incident and later took the extreme step, they further said.

Family members of the deceased student have filed a complaint against the headmaster of the school who is presently absconding.
