Citizenship Bill: Govt won’t take any decision that goes against the interest of Assam & its people, says CM Sonowal

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Wednesday reiterated that the Government will not take any decision on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, that goes against the interests of Assam and its people and that the Government will take the people of Assam into confidence before taking any decision. The Assam Chief Minister said this after meeting Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi earlier today (Wednesday).

Chief Minister Sonowal met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other top Home Ministry officials after a three-hour-long discussion on the twin issues of NRC and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

“People of Assam shouldn’t get panic. The Government will not take any decision that goes against the interests of Assam and its people. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been very categorical about this during today’s meeting,” Sarbananda Sonowal said after the meeting in New Delhi.

On the issue of NRC update, Chief Minister Sonowal said the citizen’s register will be updated on June 30 as per the directive of the Supreme Court.

Sonowal further stated that a committee will soon be constituted by the State government to ensure absolute implementation of Clause VI of the Assam Accord.

Along with Chief Minister Sonowal, Assam Chief Secretary TY Das, DGP Kuladhar Saikia, ADGP Pallab Bhattacharyaa, State Coordinator of the NRC update process Prateek Hajela were also present in the meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other officials.
