Citizenship bill: AASU-led conglomerate announces protests

PUBLISHED:

The conglomerate led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and comprising 30 organizations has announced a string of protests and demonstrations against the central government’s decision to go ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Silchar that his government hopes to get the bill passed in Parliament very soon, the AASU-led conglomerate announced that it will hit the streets in protest and appealed to the people of Assam to rise up in protest against the legislation.

While the AASU-led groups and organizations will observe Jan 7 (Monday), the day the bill is likely to be tabled in Parliament, as ‘Black Day’, it has announced an 11-hour dawn-to-dusk Assam Bandh on Tuesday (Jan 8, from 5 am to 4 pm).

Activists of AASU and the other groups will burn copies of the citizenship bill in various places of Assam on Monday as part of their ‘Black Day’ programme.

On the other hand, the group of 30 organizations will also hold the ‘Khilanjia Braja Ninaad’, a massive protest rally, in Guwahati on Jan 23.
