Chief Minister Sarma calls on Sattriya exponent Jatin Goswami after latter named for Padma Bhushan

GUWAHATI, Jan 27: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, after his return from Dibrugarh, met eminent Sattriya exponent Jatin Goswami in Guwahati today after the latter was named for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award.

“I came to congratulate him on being named for the prestigious Padma Bhushan award. He is one of the greatest exponents of Satrriya dance and a torchbearer of Sattriya culture. He has given me a few suggestions and we will try to work on them,” Chief Minister Sarma said.

Five eminent personalities of the State were named for the Padma awards by the central government on the eve of the Republic Day on Saturday.

Besides Jatin Goswami, Joynacharan Bathari, Gita Upadhyay, Anil Kumar Boro and Reba Kanta Mahanta were named for the Padma Shri award.

Goswami, a former recipient of Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, was trained in the classical Sattriya dance form, and is one of its greatest exponents.

The Sattriya dance forms a core component of Assam’s Viashnavite culture.
