Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma visits Khatara Satra, also pays tribute at Patharughat Martyrs’ Memorial

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today (June 11) visited Khatara Satra, an institution of historical and cultural significance founded in 1568 AD by Lechakonia Sri Sri Gobinda Ata, a key figure in Assam’s Neo-Vaishnavite tradition. During the visit, he offeredprayers for the welfare and prosperity of the people of Assam.

The Satra, notable for its role in fostering spiritual awareness and shaping the region’s cultural identity, remains a vital centre of religious life and community heritage.

Addressing the assembled devotees, Dr Sarma emphasised the shared responsibility of safeguarding spiritual heritage and traditional practices. He referred to his commitment made during the panchayat elections to visit the Satra and noted its fulfilment.

He reiterated that the State Government would take necessary measures to address the issues currently affecting the institution.

The visit also included a series of cultural performances organised by the Satra Management Committee, including the Krishna Pravesh Nritya from the Ankiya Bhaona tradition, Khuliya Bhauriya Nritya, Thiya Naam, and Bhortal Nritya, presented by the Satra’s artistes.

The Chief Minister appreciated the performances and conveyed his thanks to both the Committee and the artistes for their efforts.

Following this, Dr Sarma held a meeting with the Satra Management Committee, during which the Committee outlined several concerns, including a request for the reconstruction of the old Monikut and the Sabha Ghar or Namghar.

The Chief Minister stated that all necessary measures would be taken in this regard. The Committee also requested the allocation of 1,000 bighas of land in the Char-Chapori area of Darrang to facilitate agricultural activity as a means of generating a sustainable revenue stream.

Dr Sarma responded that, should the MLA and Deputy Commissioner submit a formal proposal, the State Government would initiate the necessary action.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the development and continuity of Assam’s Satra institutions.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi, former MLA Gurujyoti Das, president of the Satra Management Committee Jadav Chandra Mahanta, secretary Gangaram Baishya, and other dignitaries.

While returning to Guwahati, Dr Sarma visited the Shahid Stambha (Martyrs’ Memorial) in Patharughat and paid tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives in the Patharughat uprising.
