Charanjit Singh Channi Takes Oath As Chief Minister of Punjab

Guwahati: Charanjit Singh Channi was today sworn in as the new chief minister of Punjab along with two deputies, OP Soni and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. He was administered the oath by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit at the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Mr. Channi, who is known to be close to Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, succeeds Amarinder Singh who resigned on Saturday.

Channi will be the first Dalit to hold the post in the state. Sukhjinder Randhawa, who was the frontrunner for the post just a few hours before Channi’s appointment, was given the post of deputy chief minister along with Brahm Mohindra, AICC Treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Charanjit Singh Channi who was sworn in as Punjab’s Chief Minister. “Will continue to work with the Punjab government for the betterment of the people of Punjab,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
