GUWAHATI: In the midst of reports of thriving cattle smuggling syndicates making the rounds, 10 trucks transporting cattle, far above the permissible numbers, were seized by Assam Police at Highway number 39 connecting Sonapur to Jorabat on early hours of Thursday.
Reportedly, the cattle were being smuggled to Bangladesh mostly areas from upper Assam. Police have arrested 11 people in this connection. A total number of 173 cattle were found in these trucks.
Assam police have also seized another truck in Jorabat exporting 25 cattle across Assam.
Apart from upper Assam, cattle have been procured from places like Nagaon, Doboka, Samaguri, Rupohi and Dhemaji.
Police officials said that they have arrested 11 people including drivers, handymen and helpers of these trucks and have started with the investigation.
It is noteworthy that inter-state and international criminal gangs have been trying to smuggle cattle from various parts of the country to Bangladesh through Assam and Meghalaya.
