Budget 2024 Live Updates: Nirmala Sitharaman Presents Interim Budget, Focus On Income Tax, Job Creation

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is presenting Union Budget 2024 in Parliament. This is an interim budget as it comes just ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. 

This is Nirmala Sitharaman’s sixth Union Budget. The full-fledged budget will be presented by the new government that comes to power after the elections. 

The interim budget – a short-term financial plan – seeks Parliament nod for a grant in advance to meet the government’s essential expenditure for the first four months of the new financial year. 

The Budget Session of Parliament began yesterday with President Droupadi Murmu addressing the joint meeting of both Rajyya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The session will conclude on February 9.

Interim Budget 2024 Live: Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget Speech

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government will help “deserving” sections of middle class to build their own houses.

Key Budget 2024-25 highlights:

-FY25 gross borrowing estimated at ₹14.13 trillion, achieving a reduction from that of FY24

– Research led growth and development of indigenous oilseeds like mustard, groundnut and sesame to make India self-sufficient. Currently India imports about 60% of its cooking oil needs spending over ₹1.5 trillion in a year.

-FM has adopted an aggressive fiscal consolidation target. She has announced a FY25 fiscal deficit target of 5.1% as against the expectation of 5.3% levels. In FY24 the fiscal deficit target of 5.8% has been achieved thanks to better revenue mobilization as against the target of 5.9%.

-FM announces scheme for housing for middle class to those living in rented houses, slums, unauthorised colonies to buy or build own house.

-More medical colleges to be set up using existing infrastructure

-Healthcare cover under Ayushman Bharat scheme to be extended to all Anganwadi workers, helpers

-Efforts to boost farmers income will be stepped up

– Government to promote private investment in post harvest activities

The outlay for infrastructure has been increased to Rs 11.11 lakh crores in FY25, says FM Sitharaman.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says, “Many growth and development-enabling reforms are needed in the state for realising the vision of Viksit Bharat. A provision of Rs 75,000 Crores as a 50-year interest-free loan is proposed this year to support those milestone-linked reforms by the state governments.”
