BTR suffered the most under Congress rule: CM ~ Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today (July 3) said that the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) suffered the most during Congress rule and that it is the BJP which has brought peace to the Bodo heartland.

“The Congress party is claiming that it will contest elections in BTR this time. But remember that it was during Congress rule that BTR suffered the most. Congress never wanted peace to prevail in the Bodo heartland and it was only under the initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that peace prevailed in BTR. The Congress could also have brought peace but what it did was it played the politics of fratricidal politics,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma said while addressing a massive rally in Udalguri.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma, who is on a 5-day visit to Western Assam, said BJP’s aim is not just to win elections in BTR but to continue working for everlasting peace to prevail in the region.

“We do not want to contest the elections in BTR just for the sake of grabbing power. Power will come and go but we would like to ensure that the atmosphere of peace in the Bodo heartland is everlasting. Along with peace, we also want to bring prosperity and development to the region and hence we would like to ask the people to vote for the BJP in the upcoming elections,” he further said.

“The BTR elections will signal what will happen in 2026. If we do well in these elections, the BJP will surely form the government for the third time in Assam. And so we would like to request our party workers to give all they have in them in the next two months so that we can form the new government in BTR,” he added.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma also said that barring the Congress, the BJP has no enmity with any other political party. “We don’t have enmity with any political party except the Congress. Our only aim is that development must touch every nook and corner of BTR and brighten the life of every resident of the region. We brought peace to the region in the past five years and our aim now is to bring prosperity and development. This is our prime objective,” he further said.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma also announced that BTR elections will be held in September and that the entire exercise will end before Durga Puja.
