GUWAHATI: Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has won 17 seats in the 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election in Assam. While Pramod Boro-led United People’s Party Liberal (UPP) has emerged victorious in 12 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has bagged 9 out of total 26 seats it had contested for.
The BJP, which had one member in the outgoing council, had decided to go alone in the polls without the BPF, its ruling alliance partner in the state government.
The Congress and Naba Sarania’s Gana Suraksha Party won only one seat each.
The BJP-UPPL combine is heading towards forming the BTC as UPPL president Pramod Boro met state BJP leadership on Saturday night at North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor and Assam cabinet minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s residence in Guwahati.
Boro, who was the long-time president of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) before joining the UPPL in 2019, has won from Koklabari and Goybari constituencies. On the other hand, former BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary won in the Debargaon seat. He lost the Kachugaon seat to UPPL candidate Ukil Musahary by a margin of 507 votes.
The elections to the Council were held in two phases on December seven and 10. Its 40 constituencies spread across districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri.
The State Election Commission had deferred the polls, earlier scheduled on April 4, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The elections to the Council were held after a fresh Bodo Accord was signed in New Delhi on January 27 by the leaders of all four factions of the NDFB, then All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) Chief Pramod Boro, then BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The Council, after its term ended on April 27, is currently being administered under the supervision of Governor Jagadish Mukhi.
