BREAKING: Massive security operations in Guwahati ahead of Republic Day; cops scan various localities using dog squads, metal detectors

GUWAHATI, Jan 22: Teams of Assam Police and other paramilitary forces are out on the streets of Guwahati, and have launched massive operations using dog squads, metal detectors and other modern gadgets for possible explosives planted ahead of the upcoming Republic Day.

A search operation was carried out in the busy Ulubari locality with teams using sniffer dogs and metal detectors to foil possible attempts by militant outfits to plant explosives on or in the run-up to Republic Day.

The massive exercise comes in the wake of the recalcitrant anti-talks United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent or ULFA-I planting explosives in various places of Assam, including Guwahati, on Independence Day last year, triggering fear and panic among the people.

The explosives were, however, recovered by security forces before they could explode as security experts said the move was not to carry out blasts but to instil fear psychosis among the masses.

Nothing has been recovered during the searches carried out today.
