BREAKING: Karimganj district to be renamed Shreebhumi, announces Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI, Nov 19: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the name of Karimganj district will be changed to Shreebhumi and that the State cabinet, which sat for a meeting at Janata Bhawan today, has approved the change of name.

Chief Minister Sarma, addressing reporters after conclusion of the cabinet meeting, said the Government is planning to gradually rename places which neither has historical reference or significance nor mentions in dictionary.

“There are many places which were not named according to the significance they hold historically. Our Government will rename such places in a phased manner. We had earlier changed the names of a few places like Guwahati’s Kalapahar and Sarabbhatti. Today, the State cabinet has decided to rename Karimganj district and it will now be known as Shreebhumi,” Chief Minister Sarma said.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Sarma announced that the Government hold panchayat election in Assam in two phases and that the rolls for the elections will be published on Dec 30 while the election process will be over by February 10 next year.

He also announced that Assam will host the Assam Investment and Infrastructure Summit on February 24 and will be attended, among others, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
