The fire broke out at around 11 am at Anu Baruah Path in Gandhi Basti Tiniali. Plumes of black smoke was seen bellowing out and soon covered the entire area.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze started at a house inside the residential complex of a person named Munna Newar who had rented out rows of one and two-room houses. There were around 20 houses inside Newar’s residential complex and all of them were gutted in the fire.

As many eight LPG cylinders reportedly exploded that led to the fire to spread to nearby houses.

The fire quickly spread to another row of around 10 houses which were also rented out by a person named Aminur Rahman, gutting most of them.

Most of the affected people were daily wage labourers and petty traders, and many of them were not in their houses when the fire broke out this morning.

Property worth several lakh were gutted in the fire. Luckily no casualties has been reported.

People were seen scrambling to save whatever they could as the fire spread from one house to another stacked alongside one another.

People alleged that fire tenders came late and had they arrived early, the devastation could have been minimised.

Firemen battled hard for more than an hour before they could bring it under control.
