Police first launched a baton-charge but then fired in the air to bring the situation under control. There have also been reports of a motorcycle also being set on fire.
The clashes spread to other areas with people accusing police of failing to take steps to prevent the situation from deteriorating.
The clashes and stone-pelting incidents are linked to an incident that took place infront of the mosque a couple of days ago when some miscreants reportedly vandalized a couple of motorcycles.
The situation is tense with additional police and paramilitary forces being deployed in the clashes-hit area.
