Brahmins in Assam seek apology from Shankaracharya of Puri for his ‘Brahmins of Assam ate beef’ remark ~ People of Assam, particularly the Brahmin community, have expressed shock and anger over Shankaracharya of Puri Swami Nischalananda Saraswati’s comment where he claimed that Assamese Brahmins ate beef and that he had taken steps to ‘correct’ the practice.

The Puri Shankaracharya’s comment has angered the Brahmin community of Assam who are now demanding that the Hindu seer, who is otherwise revered and held in very high esteem, takes back his statement within three days and also tender an unconditional apology.

“There is a custom, and a very bizarre practice, that in Assam Brahmins kill cow and eat its meat. We tried to get it stopped,” Swami Nischalananda Saraswati was heard saying in a video.

The Assam Brahmin Samanayrakshi Samity rejected the seer’s remark saying there is no historical reference of Brahmins of Assam consuming beef.

“He should tell us when and in which place of Assam did Brahmins consume cow meat. The remark that he has made is not based on truth and we demand that he takes back what he had said and seek an apology within three days. Or else we will be forced to take legal action against him,” an office-bearer of the Assam Brahmin Samanayrakshi Samity told News Live.

The Assam Brahman Samaj Front, another organizations of Assamese Brahmins, also demanded that the Shankaracharya of Puri seek an apology for his slanderous remark.
