BJP President Nadda not to celebrate his birthday due to COVID-19

New Delhi: BJP president J P Nadda will not celebrate his birthday, which falls on Wednesday, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the party said, asking people to follow precautionary guidelines to keep the virus at bay. Nadda turned 60 on Wednesday.

The ruling party posted the message on social media on Tuesday, apparently to avoid crowding of Nadda’s residence or office by its members or supporters who often turn up in large numbers to offer birthday wishes to their leaders.

“His (Nadda’s) request to all of you is remain at home and be safe while following guidelines to keep the COVID at bay,” the party said.

Nadda, who is from Himachal Pradesh by origin and was born in Patna in 1960 to Narain Lall Nadda and Krishna Nadda. He did his schooling and college from Patna and later completed his LLB from Himachal Pradesh University.

Considered a low profile leader, Nadda was actively associated with student and youth politics first as a member of the RSS’ student wing ABVP and then the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was first elected to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in the election of 1993, he was subsequently re-elected in 1998. During his first term, he served as the Leader of his party group in the H.P. Legislative Assembly, from 1994 to 1998. 

Nadda was elected again in the 2007 Himachal Pradesh election and served as cabinet minister for Forest, Environment, Science and Technology, in the Prem Kumar Dhumal government from 2008 to 2010.

JP Nadda got elected to Rajya Sabha in 2012 and in 2014, after a cabinet reshuffle, he was made the Minister of Health by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He served in PM Modi’s cabinet till June 2019 and was appointed as the national working President of Bharatiya Janata Party. 

It was on 20 January 2020, Nadda was elected unanimously as the BJP National President. He took over the party reins from outgoing president Amit Shah.
