Bihu committees give thumbs up to CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s appeal to cancel functions from May 10

PUBLISHED:

Hours after Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed Bihu committees to cancel the remainder of the Bihu functions in the wake of the heightened tension between India and Pakistan, several Bihu committees have voluntarily agreed to his appeal and have decided not to hold Bihu functions from May 10 (tomorrow).

“Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and contributions.

However, the time has now come to conclude this festive season. I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma had written on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

Meanwhile, district administrations have issued notices announcing that permissions earlier awarded to Bihu committees to hold functions would stand cancelled from May 10.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma further urged people to act as responsible citizens in the hour of crisis and to “reject fake news from vested interest”, “report those trying to undermine our Armed Forces” and “comply with official guidelines”.
