Dr Bhupen Hazarika conferred Bharat Ratna posthumously

In a massive development, music maestro ‘Sudhakontho’ Dr Bhupen Hazarika has been conferred the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna by the central government. President Ram Nath Kovind, in a communiqué, announced the government’s decision to confer Bharat Ratna on Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Along with Dr Hazarika, former president Pranab Mukherjee and Late social activist Nanaji Deshmukh have also been conferred the country’s highest civilian award.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika is the second Assamese after Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi (1999) to have been conferred Bharat Ratna.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance, Health & PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed their delight at Dr Bhupen Hazarika being conferred Bharat Ratna.

“The songs and music of Shri Bhupen Hazarika are admired by people across generations. From them radiates the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood. He popularised India’s musical traditions globally. Happy that the Bharat Ratna has been conferred on Bhupen Da,” PM Modi tweeted.

“It is matter of great pride and delight that Dr Bhupen Hazarika has been posthumously conferred with #BharatRatna. My gratitude to Prime Minister Sri @narendramodi. We are all elated,” Finance, Health & PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on the social media.

On the other hand, renowned surgeon and population expert Dr Illias Ali & eminent innovator Uddhab Bharali will be conferred with the Padma Shri award.
