The ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by the Congress party and supported by the Left and other Opposition parties affected normal life across the country today (Sep 10). The shutdown, called to protest skyrocketing fuel prices, affected normal life with Congress leaders and activists taking to the streets and shouting anti-government slogans besides displaying banners and placards.
The bandh was called from 9 am to 3 pm today.
Several Congress leaders were detained after they blocked roads and disrupted smooth movement of traffic in various towns, including the State capital Guwahati, besides burning tyres in streets and highways.

Bandh supporters also clashed with police at various places forcing cops to take then into preventive detention for violating section 144 CrPC.
APCC president Ripun Borah, AICC in-charge of Assam Harish Rawat, former Congress ministers Rakibul Hussain, Ardhendu Kumar Dey and other leaders and activists were detained by police.
People, meanwhile, had a tough time as public transport vehicles kept off the roads while a few ASTC-run buses ferried passengers.
Shops and business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed while attendances in several government offices were also very thin.
