Behali By-poll: CPI(ML)’s Bibek Das, who came third in 2021, 2016 & 2011 assembly elections, to be Opposition candidate

GUWAHATI, Oct 19: The Congress party has decided to not field its party candidate in Behali for the Nov 13 assembly by-polls and it will be the CPI(ML) whose candidate will become the Opposition’s nominee for the hustings.

Interestingly, the CPI(ML) is likely to award the candidature to Bibek Das and he will be the Opposition candidate against the BJP.

Bibek Das, meanwhile, said today that the political wind in the constituency is in favour of the CPI(ML) and that he, after officially announced as the Opposition candidate, will surely emerge out as the winner on Nov 23 when results will be declared.

Bibek Das, interestingly, has had a history of defeats, the most recent being in the 2021 assembly elections when he came third securing 21,531 votes behind Independent candidate Jayanta Borah (23,744) and Ranjit Dutta (53,583).

Incidentally, not just in the 2021 polls, he has had a history of grabbing the third position in three successive assembly elections since 2011. He claimed ‘bronze’ in 2016 getting just 8,025 votes; in 2011, he came third again securing 12,784 votes.
