GUWAHATI, Aug 20: Four persons including the father and mother of the 11-day-old baby girl whose body was exhumed in Bajali after she was allegedly killed by her own father have so far been arrested by Bajali Police.
Police arrested Niranjan Malakar (father), Konmani Malakar (mother), Promila Malakar (Niranjan Malakar’s sister) and Khagen Malakar (cousin of Niranjan Malakar).
Niranjan Malakar, the infant’s father who is being said to be the prime accused, was taken into custody by police yesterday evening after he was caught hiding in their granary.
The rest of the arrests were made today following an FIR (Case No 54/2023 U/S 302/201/318 IPC) was registered based on a complaint lodged by Konmani Malakar’s younger brother.
Incidentally, the body of the infant was recovered buried near a rivulet amid allegations that it was the baby’s father who had killed her after a failed attempt to sell her off due to weak financial condition of the family.
The name of a physician named Dr Diganta Choudhury of Swahid Madan Rauta Sub-divisional Civil Hospital, Pathsala, is also doing the rounds amid allegations that he had advised the couple to sell off the baby to some well-to-do family. This after the parents of the infant went to him when the mother was on the seventh month of pregnancy and requested him to carry out an abortion surgery which, he claimed, he refused to do.
