Back 1951 as cut-off year, Shiladitya tells Samujjal

PUBLISHED:

BJP legislator Shiladitya Dev today (July 28) appealed AASU and its chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyaa to support 1951 and not 1971 as the cut-off year for NRC update. The loudmouth Hojai MLA, who is often mired in controversy, claimed that people of Assam will be indebted to the AASU and Samujjal Bhattacharyaa if they support 1951 as the base year for updating the citizens’ register.

“I urge Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyaa to support 1951 as the cut-off year for NRC update. If the AASU files a PIL in Supreme Court, it will help a lot in changing the cut-off year from 1971 to 1951. People will remain indebted to him and the AASU,” Shiladitya Dev told NEWS LIVE.

He also said if the AASU chief adviser sticks to 1971 as the base year, people might question as to whether he and his descendents came from “East Pakistan”.

The Hojai MLA further expressed apprehension that people who submitted documents of 1966 to 1971 will also be declared foreigners according to the constitution.

“Those who had submitted documents of 1966 to 1971 will also be declared foreigners according to the constitution. They will lose government jobs, voting rights and will have to re-apply for Indian citizenship and can become citizens only 10 years later,” Dev said.
