In the backdrop of the massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, families of the 855 martyrs of the Assam Agitation today (Jan 30) returned the mementos given to them by the State Government protesting the latter’s move to back the citizenship bill.
Family members of the then AASU activists who were killed during the 6-year-long Assam Agitation returned the citations awarded to them by the government on Dec 10, 2016, to the deputy commissioners of the respective districts they hail from.
“We are extremely dissatisfied with the role of the Government over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. It’s an insult to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation. We are protesting against the government by handing over the award and the recognition the government gave us,” a family member said in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, AGP president Atul Bora claimed the stand taken by the government has forced families of the martyrs to return the recognition.
