GUWAHATI, Jan 14: German veteran Laura Siegemund caused the first major upset of the Australian Open 2025, stunning Olympic champion and last year’s runner-up Zheng Qinwen of China 7-6(3), 6-3.
Meanwhile, top-seeded and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka battled hard to defeat 54th-ranked Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5 at the Rod Laver Arena to move into the next round.
Sabalenka, winner at Melbourne in 2023 and 2024, is now attempting to become the first woman to win three straight Australian Open singles titles since Martina Hingis who won from 1997 to 1999.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Jessica Pegula and 14th seed Mirra Andreeva also sailed into the third round on Wednesday afternoon.
