GUWAHATI, Feb 16: At least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, were killed and many others injured in a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night.
The stampede was caused following a sudden rush of passengers on their way to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj as they assembled to catch a special train to the pilgrimage town.
While the government has announced compensation to the next of kin of the deceased as well as those injured, the Railways Ministry also announced a high-level inquiry into the “unfortunate incident”.
“Rs 10 lakh compensation has been announced to the families of the deceased who lost their lives in the New Delhi Railway Station stampede yesterday. Rs 2.5 lakh compensation to the seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to the minor injured,” the Indian Railways announced.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, condoled the loss of life in the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede,” he wrote on ‘X’.
